The US State Department has lifted some rules on re-entry into the US via air. Travel from Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and some Caribbean regions will not need a passport for re-entry into the US. Altho to re-enter, you will need a state issued photo ID and a Department of State official proof of application for a passport. Please be advised that you will still need to pay attention to other countries rules for entry. This only applies coming back to the US. This went into effect on June 8th.
To get the exact details from the Department of State, please read the article on their site.
