Let the rumors starting flying again about airline mergers. Who is it this time? United and US Airways?

Charlotte Business Journal writes,

Comments last week by United Airlines’ Chief Financial Officer Jake Brace have fueled speculation the carrier may be interested in a merger with US Airways Group Inc.

During a Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. Global Transportation Conference, Brace said United is looking for a partner with a strong presence in the Northeast and a Southern hub with good access to the Caribbean and Latin America.

Some people say United could be wanting to move quickly with a merger. They have not gotten their first or second choices of United or Continental which could leave the door open for US Airways analysts are saying.

What about a antitrust concerns? Back in 2001 when United and US Airways tried to merge, the government would not let it happen. At this point in time, I think the government wouldn’t interfere. They realize and know the airlines are going to have consolidate to keep afloat.
