Let’s continue with the one of the best sites out there for the PilotJohn.com Avwards! I am definitely going to choose this site for the iPhone for the last two months. It is definitely worth it for all the pilots out there! If you are an aviation enthusiast, you still better give it a try!

The two developers of ForeFlight, Tyson Weihs and Jason Miller have developed the best iPhone web application out there for pilots. As soon as I signed up for an account and started using it on my iPhone, I knew I would be using this on a daily basis!

I was very lucky to ask Tyson a few questions about the site, and I am very grateful he took the time out of his busy schedule to respond to them! You can view the whole list of questions here, but here is the first question for everyone!

The Inspiration behind ForeFlight.com for the iPhoneMy partner Jason Miller (there are two Jason Millers in the aviation world: Jason Miller of The Finer Points and Jason Miller of ForeFlight) and I saw the iPhone as a greenfield opportunity to bring an innovative mobile aviation application to market. The iPhone as a platform is the first we’ve seen that really compelled us to dig in and create something special. We are also both seasoned software developers that have written a variety of small and large scale desktop and web applications, and we already had many of the components in place to make ForeFlight possible. The intersection of our pre-existing body of work and the introduction of this platform created a great opportunity.Digging further into the “why” behind foreflight, pilots (including us), as part of their planning process, typically digest a ton of information from a variety of sources: DUATs, ADDS, AOPA, Flight Service, and many others. Although we could see iPhone toting pilots using the iPhone to navigate a subset of the available offerings, the idea of doing that from one application was much more compelling. Also, once you’ve used the iPhone for a while, you begin to understand that a purpose-built optimized application is the way to deliver a compelling experience. Clicking and zooming and sliding gets old after a while. The iPhone gave us a platform we could use to to create one application capable of elegantly organizing and presenting the relevant set of important information and capabilities to pilots.

The first 7 days of signing up for an account are free! After that, its $7.95 a month or $75 for a year and with the year you do get a FREE iPhone case! Now what are you waiting for, sign up now! For the CFI’s out there in the audience, they are having a special deal where you can get a free year if you are practicing your CFI certificate.

Thank you Tyson and Jason for taking your ambitions and developing something that is extremely useful for the pilots that are iPhone owners! Keep up the great work!

Here is a short video that explains all the features of this application.
