AirplaneBlog.com
I am very honored and excited to award the first PilotJohn.com AVward to a great aviation blog!
Congratulations to AirplaneBlog.com!!
The site owner Garry has a huge passion for aviation, and his passion soars through his website. I got to ask Garry a few questions about his site and himself, and I can’t thank him enough for taking the time to answer these in great detail.
- What gave you the idea to start airplaneblog.com
I am actually a full time blogger with quite a few dot Com blogs. A lot of my blogs I build for the purpose of monetizing including a few aviation related sites. Aside from that however, I do really enjoy blogging and writing. Building sites for monetization is one thing, but building a community and building relationships through my blogs and articles is an awesome experience. The Airplane Blog was started as a site for meeting people in the aviation industry and teaching others from outside the industry how much fun airplanes and aviation can be. The site features many articles that bring out the excitement in aviation. I am growing many sections on the site that allow for people to discover not only what certain airplanes look like but also what they sound like. Furthermore, if videos are available they are shown as well. My goal is to inspire anyone who wants to get involved in the industry. Whether the reader has an interest in becoming a pilot, an owner, or even sales. Perhaps the reader is just a history buff. All in all The Airplane Blog is a place that opens arms to anyone who expresses even a slight level of interest in airplanes and aviation.
- How long have you been active with airplaneblog.com?
I launched The Airplane Blog on July 17th, 2007. As the site itself is new, I have been involved in blogging for two years and have built very successful online businesses within the last tens years. I am the creator and former owner of www.aircraftdealer.com and the former owner of www.avhome.com. These two very successful aviation sites were sold to a family member three years ago. Building web sites and blogs is my business. My main site, www.garryconn.com is a blog where I take what I have learned over the past ten years and teach others about my online successes and attempt to guide and help them into pursuing their dreams of running an online business through blogging. The Airplane Blog is a site that fully expels my talents with web design, programming and social networking and ties it all into aviation. I absolutely love airplanes. They are my passion. I love aviation history and every day when I walk outside and see an airplane fly over head, I have to stop what I am doing to admire it.
- Are you currently a pilot or involved in the aviation community?
The funny thing is, I don’t have any involvement in the industry. I have family members who are pilots and involved in aircraft sales. However, I am not a pilot, nor do I hold a full time job in the industry. I am more less just a guy who loves airplanes and the history of aviation. Sorry for the let down there!
- What is your favorite aviation moment in your life?
My favorite aviation moment is when I was a child. I was 11 years old and my father had a pilot teach me how to fly an old beater Cessna 152. I logged in quite a few hours and I even still have my pilots log book. In the upcoming years when my children are grown and out of college, I will pursue flying lessons and eventually you will find me in the air more than in front of a computer.
- What made you fall in love for aviation?
What is more amazing than taking a huge metal object that can weigh as much as a house and can be almost as big as a football field, slap some huge powerful turbine engines on it and send it on its way. Come on man… airplanes are the most amazing invention in the world. They are beautiful. They are powerful. And they totally express what human beings are capable of. God didn’t create us with wings, yet He created us with brains. And God has given us the ability to think and be creative. With the intelligence of the human mind, we have not only taken aviation into the skies, but we have ventured out of our own atmosphere and traveled to the moon and other planets in our solar system. Airplanes are the result of our human intelligence. And everyday that goes by, airplanes get better and better. But the root to my passion stems down to WWII era. Man, there were some amazing airplanes manufactured back in that era.
- Do you have an airplane of your own?
No. In due time… I will eventually pick up a beater airplane that most people would think you are nuts for flying. I don’t need anything expensive, just something to get me in the air.
- What is your favorite airline? airplane?
I love SouthWest Airlines. They make flying pretty fun and get the job done. Most of their business is generated via their web site. That little known fact makes them pretty cool in my eyes. With me having a background of building online businesses and seeing SouthWest do so well with theirs, naturally I enjoy seeing their successes. My favorite airplane! Oh man, that’s a tough question… its like asking me what my favorite movie is. Airplanes such as the P40 Warhawk are some of my favorites. these airplanes were bad ass. Imagine some fifty plus years ago, being on a field and seeing an airplane like this swooping down from the skies shooting flaming bullets at you. Imagine being in the air and being chased by one of these bad boys…. could you shake him off you? Doubt it… if you had a P40 on your six, you were dead. This airplane looks mean, it is mean, and it was designed for one thing. Kicking ass.
Another favorite airplane of mine is the A-10 Warthog. This airplane has of the most powerful aircraft cannons ever flown. This airplane is nothing more than a flying Gatling gun. Its power is amazing and the airplane can be heard miles away as it is equipped with one of the loudest turbine engines ever. When you hear a Hog coming your way, you better find cover and find it quick.
What about civilian airplanes? Hmm… man where do I begin? Cessna 172’s are cool and are very practical for the average family with an average income.. but I guess that would be a very generic answer as they are so very popular. The Citabria is way cool. Also an older airplane, the Dehavilland DHC-2 is a beautiful airplane.
- What other misc info would you like to share about yourself?
As much as I appreciate technology and modern airplanes, I have appreciate the history of aviation and older airplanes. Look at the airplanes of yesterday and just a mere 50 years later look at the airplanes in the sky today. Name on thing that has changed and has grown at such a rapid pace as aviation. Airplanes are truly amazing and I am excited to have the opportunity to use my web development and design skills to produce a site that will be so amazing and so useful and will grow over time. I am very excited to see what The Airplane Blog will look like a year from now.
