ForeFlight.com has developed the best iPhone web application to date for pilots! I am extremely happy to give the past two months to ForeFlight.com the PilotJohn.com Avward! Here is a short interview with Tyson Weihs and Jason Miller! Thank you Tyson for responding back to me!

1. The inspiration?
My partner Jason Miller (there are two Jason Millers in the aviation world: Jason Miller of The Finer Points and Jason Miller of ForeFlight) and I saw the iPhone as a greenfield opportunity to bring an innovative mobile aviation application to market. The iPhone as a platform is the first we’ve seen that really compelled us to dig in and create something special. We are also both seasoned software developers that have written a variety of small and large scale desktop and web applications, and we already had many of the components in place to make ForeFlight possible. The intersection of our pre-existing body of work and the introduction of this platform created a great opportunity.
Digging further into the “why” behind foreflight, pilots (including us), as part of their planning process, typically digest a ton of information from a variety of sources: DUATs, ADDS, AOPA, Flight Service, and many others. Although we could see iPhone toting pilots using the iPhone to navigate a subset of the available offerings, the idea of doing that from one application was much more compelling. Also, once you’ve used the iPhone for a while, you begin to understand that a purpose-built optimized application is the way to deliver a compelling experience. Clicking and zooming and sliding gets old after a while. The iPhone gave us a platform we could use to to create one application capable of elegantly organizing and presenting the relevant set of important information and capabilities to pilots.
2. Purpose?
We’re feeding an entrepreneurial addiction, a desire to marry personal interests with professional ones and to create something exciting.
3. Pilots?
Yes. I’m only recently minted (last December). Most of my time is spent either in a 172SP or a Mooney Eagle flying for business in Texas. My partner Jason Miller is an instrument rated pilot who regularly flies Cessna and Cirrus aircraft.
4. Favorite Aviation Moment?
Lifting off while seated in the back of a restored B-24 wondering what my grandfather was thinking about as he did the same many times over the pacific in WWII.
Again, Congrats to ForeFlight.com! and Jason and Tyson!
