What are aircraft towbars and towbar heads?

Aircraft towbars and towbar heads work together to solve the problem of easily maneuvering - or towing - your aircraft while it is on the ground. Generally, light aircraft can be moved using a handheld towbar without much difficulty, while heavy aircraft can be moved with a towbar attached to an aircraft tug. Due to the significance of maneuvering grounded aircraft, towbars should always be operated by trained personnel as well as visually inspected before use to ensure its integrity is intact.

A common question PJI receives about aircraft towbars and towbar heads is “What does shock and shear protection mean?” PJI is here to explain.

Shock and Shear Protection on Tronair Aircraft Towbars and Towbar Heads

Tronair towbars and towbar heads are recognized worldwide as reliable, exceptional and essential pieces of aircraft GSE. As a benefit to its users, Tronair aircraft towbars are equipped with shock absorption mechanisms, and Tronair aircraft towbar heads come with shear protection.

Shock absorber protection for Tronair aircraft towbars help prevent damage to the nose gear from shock loads while maneuvering excessive loads or heavy aircraft through a spring that absorbs any shock that is experienced.

Shear protection for Tronair aircraft towbar heads helps prevent vital bolts and attachments from breaking off while in use - especially while turning at sharp angles - while also minimizing the likelihood of towbar damage and aircraft rolling away. Tronair towbar heads will incorporate one of the following three shear formats, while others will incorporate tension/compression and/or radial shear protection:Tension/Compression shear protection from excessive “pull” or “push” loads to nose gear.

  • Radial Shear protection of nose gear from excessive loads while turning. Attachment heads are made to break a shear pin if a safe turning load is exceeded, but the head stays secured to the towbar.
  • Dual Shear attachment heads are made to break a shear pin if maximum turning load or straight overload limits are exceeded, but the head stays secured to the towbar.
