QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
The 128CEC2-AA-S5 is aviation-calibrated for Concorde sealed valve-regulated AGM and flooded lead-acid batteries. This ensures the correct charging and float voltages are applied for Concorde battery chemistry. Using a charger designed for the exact battery type helps maintain airworthiness and optimize service life.
The charger follows a structured sequence that includes Soft-Start, Constant Current (Bulk), Constant Voltage (Absorption), Battery Test, and Float (Maintenance) stages. This controlled progression allows the battery to reach full charge safely without overcharging. By automatically transitioning to maintenance mode, the unit supports long-term battery health.
Soft-Start is activated when battery voltage is below 10.5V and applies a low constant current to gently raise voltage. This prepares weak or neglected aviation batteries for the full 8-amp bulk charge stage. If the voltage is too low, the charger may reject the battery to prevent unsafe charging conditions.
The 128CEC2-AA-S5 includes an Ambient Temperature Sensor (ATS-1) that automatically adjusts the output voltage based on temperature. The Temperature Compensation LED indicates when cold or hot adjustments are being applied. This prevents overcharging in hot conditions and undercharging in cold environments, which can lead to sulfation or freezing.
Yes, once fully charged, the unit automatically enters Float (Maintenance) mode. In this stage, it can remain connected indefinitely to maintain optimal voltage and prevent sulfation. Continuous maintenance is recommended to maximize the longevity of the Concorde aviation battery.
The LED indicator system provides real-time feedback, including Battery Weak (amber), Bad Cell (red flashing), and Testing (blue) indicators. During the Battery Test stage, the charger applies a load and checks voltage retention. These built-in diagnostics help technicians quickly assess whether a Concorde battery is serviceable.
Avoid charging in tightly confined areas unless proper ventilation is available, as hydrogen gas may accumulate. For FAA-certified aircraft, the optional BM-AIK2 Airframe Interface Kit is recommended for safe, compliant, quick connection. Always follow the battery manufacturer’s Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA).
The charger continuously applies desulfation pulses whenever it is outputting current. This helps break down sulfate buildup that forms when aviation batteries sit partially discharged. Over time, desulfation improves capacity retention and helps meet required capacity test standards.
The 128CEC2-AA-S5 can maintain up to two fully healthy, fully desulfated batteries when properly configured. Each battery must be individually tested and fully charged before connecting them in parallel for maintenance. Attempting to desulfate multiple batteries at once is not recommended.
After charging and allowing the battery to “rest” for 8 to 12 hours, a fully charged 12V battery should measure approximately 12.9 to 13.1 volts open circuit. Readings below 12.4V may indicate significant sulfation or reduced capacity. Proper testing after a rest period ensures accurate state-of-charge evaluation.
