The CDI 10ST-I is a J-shank preset interchangeable-head torque wrench covering 84–300 in-lb (9.5–33.9 Nm) in a short-tube design that reduces the operator force required to reach the preset torque value. At 11 inches and 0.90 lb it shares the same physical footprint as the 10T-I, but the extended front tube section increases the mechanical advantage at the point of application — the same preset torque is reached with less physical effort per cycle.

Why reduced operator force matters on a production line

In a production environment where the same operator applies the same preset torque to the same fastener location hundreds of times per shift, the per-cycle force required directly affects fatigue accumulation and end-of-shift consistency. A short-tube design that reduces the input force needed to achieve each click means the operator is physically less taxed through the production run — and a less fatigued operator at cycle 500 produces the same torque result as at cycle 1. For overhaul shops processing batches of identical engines or airframe subassemblies, that consistency across the full batch is the product.

How the 10ST-I range differs from the 10T-I

The 10T-I covers 30–250 in-lb and reaches lighter hardware at its lower end — connector backshell hardware, instrumentation fasteners, and light accessory mounting in the 30–80 in-lb band. The 10ST-I covers 84–300 in-lb and is calibrated for the upper accessory and structural band — magneto mounting, carburetor and fuel injection attachment, vacuum pump and alternator bolts, and heavier accessory case hardware in the 100–300 in-lb range. If the production spec falls below 84 in-lb, the 10T-I is the correct tool. If the spec falls in the 84–250 in-lb overlap and reducing operator fatigue on a high-cycle line is a priority, the 10ST-I's short-tube geometry addresses it.

User-set vs. factory-set: which to order

The 10ST-I ships unset — the operator sets the torque value within 84–300 in-lb. No calibration certificate is included. For environments requiring NIST-traceable calibration documentation at a specific preset value, order the 10ST-I-SET, which CDI factory-presets to a value specified at order and ships with a NIST-traceable certificate. Specify the required value when ordering; allow 10 days lead time.

Documentation and compliance

Meets ASME B107.14 and ISO 6789. Accuracy: ±4% CW of indicated value from 20–100% of full scale. The user-set 10ST-I does not ship with a calibration certificate — for QCM or quality program traceability requirements, select the 10ST-I-SET.

Why source aviation tooling from Pilot John International

Pilot John International is an aviation-specialist distributor — not a general industrial catalog. We serve Part 145 repair stations, FBOs, MRO operations, and flight schools across the U.S. Whether your line runs the user-set 10ST-I or requires the factory-certified 10ST-I-SET, both come from the same aviation-specialist source that understands production torque documentation requirements across the entire engine and airframe manufacturing spectrum.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Question:
What does the "ST" in CDI 10ST-I stand for and what does it mean operationally?
Answer:

ST designates short tube — the 10ST-I has an extended front tube section that increases the mechanical advantage at the point of torque application compared to the standard 10T-I body. The result is that the operator achieves the same preset torque value with less input force per cycle. On a high-cycle production line where the same operator applies the same preset torque hundreds of times per shift, that per-cycle force reduction directly reduces fatigue accumulation and helps maintain consistency through the full production run.

Asked May 3, 2026
Question:
How does the 10ST-I range differ from the 10T-I, and when should I choose one over the other?
Answer:

The 10T-I covers 30–250 in-lb and is calibrated for the full range from light avionics hardware at 30 in-lb through upper accessory hardware at 250 in-lb. The 10ST-I covers 84–300 in-lb and is calibrated for the upper accessory and structural band. If the production spec falls below 84 in-lb, choose the 10T-I. If the spec falls in the 84–250 in-lb overlap and reducing operator force on a high-cycle line is a priority, the 10ST-I's short-tube design directly addresses that. If the spec falls between 250 and 300 in-lb, the 10ST-I is the only J-shank preset that covers it.

Asked May 3, 2026
Question:
Does the CDI 10ST-I come with a calibration certificate?
Answer:

No. The user-set 10ST-I ships without a calibration certificate. For a factory-preset version with a NIST-traceable calibration certificate, order the 10ST-I-SET and specify the required torque value at the time of order. CDI factory-presets the wrench and ships it certified; allow approximately 10 days lead time.

Asked May 3, 2026
Question:
What production applications is the CDI 10ST-I best suited for?
Answer:

The 10ST-I is best suited for high-cycle production lines and overhaul shops in the 84–300 in-lb band — magneto mounting hardware, carburetor and fuel injection attachment, vacuum pump and alternator bolts, engine accessory case cover fasteners, and airframe subassembly structural hardware where the same torque value is applied repeatedly to identical fasteners across a production batch or overhaul run. The short-tube design provides the most benefit on lines where cycle count is high and per-operator fatigue is a consistency concern.
