Sulfation occurs when lead sulfate crystals build up on the lead plates inside a lead-acid battery. During normal operation, a lead-acid battery undergoes a chemical reaction that converts electrical energy into chemical energy (during charging) and vice versa (during discharging). The lead plates in the battery alternate between lead sulfate and lead dioxide depending on the charging/discharging state.

If a battery is partially discharged for extended periods, some lead sulfate crystals remain on the plates and can grow larger over time. Excessive heat generated by overcharging a battery can also accelerate the formation of sulfate crystals.

As sulfate crystals build up, the surface area available for the chemical reaction to take place is reduced. This leads to a decrease in the battery’s ability to hold a charge (i.e., reduced capacity).

A sulfated battery will also take longer to charge because the chemical reaction is less efficient. In some cases, the battery may not be able to hold a charge at all, leading to complete failure. In fact, sulfation is the leading cause of early battery failure.

BatteryMINDer desulfators work by delivering high-frequency electronic pulses to the battery. These pulses break down the sulfate crystals that form on the battery plates, allowing the lead and acid to recombine and restore battery capacity. This process does not cause a loss of electrolyte, thus ensuring that sealed batteries, as well as “wet” batteries, never die due to a loss of electrolyte.
