Refractometers measure the concentration of specific fluids by assessing how light bends (refracts) when it passes through a sample. To use a refractometer, a technician places a drop of the fluid on the instrument’s prism, which directs light through the fluid. The device then calculates the fluid’s concentration or freezing point based on the angle of refraction.
