QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
The 128CEC2-AA-S3 model is calibrated for Hawker-Odyssey® and Gill LT/7000 aviation batteries. Using a charger matched to the correct battery chemistry ensures proper absorption and float voltages. This aviation-specific calibration helps maintain airworthiness and maximize AGM battery performance.
The manual recommends qualifying or testing the battery before charging or desulfating to confirm it is serviceable. Even new Hawker-Odyssey aviation batteries may have developed sulfation from improper storage. Testing open-circuit voltage after a rest period provides a reliable baseline for recovery expectations.
If the battery voltage is below normal thresholds at startup, the charger enters Soft-Start mode to gradually raise the voltage before applying full current. If the voltage is extremely low, the unit will reject the battery to prevent unsafe charging. This built-in safeguard protects both the charger and the aircraft battery system.
The charger progresses through the Soft-Start, Constant Current (Bulk), Constant Voltage (Absorption), Battery Test, and Float (Maintenance) stages. Each stage is designed to safely restore capacity without overcharging sensitive AGM plates. The automatic transition to float mode supports continuous maintenance between flights.
The integrated Ambient Temperature Sensor (ATS-1) automatically adjusts charge and float voltages based on ambient conditions. The output voltage varies across temperature ranges to prevent overcharging in hot conditions or undercharging in cold conditions. This is critical for aircraft stored in unheated hangars or exposed to seasonal extremes.
The LED indication table explains that an amber “Battery Weak” light signals low voltage during Soft-Start or after testing. A flashing red “Bad Cell” indicator means one or more cells have failed and the battery must be replaced. These diagnostics allow technicians to quickly assess airworthiness.
Yes, once the battery reaches full charge, the unit automatically enters Float (Maintenance) mode. In this mode, it can remain connected indefinitely to prevent sulfation and self-discharge. Continuous maintenance is recommended for aircraft that are flown infrequently.
Avoid charging in tightly confined areas due to the potential for hydrogen gas buildup. Follow the battery manufacturer’s FAA-approved Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA). For certified aircraft, a permanent quick-connect harness, such as the BM-AIK2 Airframe Interface Kit, is advised.
The manual states that up to two fully healthy batteries may be maintained together, provided each has been individually tested and fully desulfated first. Attempting to desulfate multiple batteries at once is not recommended. Using approved Y-connectors ensures balanced maintenance charging.
A fully charged and rested 12V battery should measure approximately 12.9 to 13.1 volts. Batteries reading below 12.4 volts after resting may be partially discharged or sulfated. Accurate voltage testing should be performed after the battery has rested for 8 to 12 hours without load.
