The Barfield 102-03120 is the CT12A Digital Multi-Cable Tensiometer configured for 1/16" through 3/16" cable diameters — covering the five standard cable sizes used across the vast majority of general aviation, turboprop, and business jet primary and secondary flight control systems. Select the cable size, clamp the instrument onto the cable, and read the tension directly from the 4-character digital LCD display. No calibration chart lookup, no riser selection, no manual conversion. Both Standard Mode and Averaging Mode are available — Standard Mode for fast individual readings, Averaging Mode to automatically average three consecutive measurements and compensate for cable surface variation. Every 102-03120 ships factory pre-calibrated with a NIST-traceable Certificate of Calibration and a serial-matched Verification Bar for pre-use field accuracy confirmation.

The CT12A Platform — Why It Was Built and What It Does Differently

The CT12A was developed in cooperation with a major aircraft OEM because existing mechanical tensiometers — requiring chart conversions, riser selection, and manual multi-reading averaging — introduced human variability into cable tension measurement that OEM programs needed to eliminate. The 102-03120 addresses that directly on the five cable sizes it covers. The integrated load cell delivers a digital tension reading the moment the instrument is clamped onto the cable. Averaging Mode does automatically what the T5 series service manual says to do manually: it takes three readings and averages them, removing the arithmetic and the judgment call. The display shows temperature in selectable °C or °F alongside the tension value — one instrument, one look, all the data needed for a temperature-corrected tension check. The 3.7V DC lithium rechargeable battery provides up to 28 hours of normal operation, recharging in approximately 2.5 hours. The instrument carries a 10-year rated useful life reflecting the OEM-grade design longevity Barfield built into the CT12A platform.

102-03120 in the CT12A Multi-Cable Family

The CT12A family offers multi-cable and single-cable configurations across a range of cable size coverages. The 102-03120 covers 1/16"–3/16" — the five standard cable diameters that account for most primary and secondary flight control cables in the general aviation, turboprop, and business jet maintenance market. The 102-03108 extends coverage to 1/4" for programs working on larger aircraft where 7/32" and 1/4" cables are also present. Both use identical CT12A electronics, display features, and measurement modes. Choose the 102-03120 when all cable sizes on the aircraft fall within 1/16"–3/16"; choose the 102-03108 when 7/32" or 1/4" cables are also in scope.

Barfield 102-03120 Calibration — Everything Your Program Needs to Know

Calibration for the Barfield 102-03120 CT12A is more structured than most aviation test equipment — and understanding the full requirements before the instrument enters service is essential for any QMS-driven maintenance operation. Here is what the Barfield CT12A instruction manual establishes and what it means operationally:

Annual Recertification — Mandatory for Both Units. The 102-03120 CT12A and its serial-matched Verification Bar both have a mandatory one-year recertification requirement. This is not conditional on usage frequency — it applies regardless of how many measurements were taken in the preceding year. Both must be recertified together, and both require a current, valid calibration certificate to be in compliance. For regulated maintenance programs operating under FAA oversight, DOD contracts, OEM quality requirements, or ISO 9001/AS9100 systems, maintaining current calibration certificates for both units is a documentation requirement that cannot be deferred or abbreviated.

The Verification Bar Is Serial-Matched and Non-Transferable. Each 102-03120 ships with a Verification Bar calibrated and matched to that specific serial-numbered instrument. The bar may not be used with any other CT12A unit. Before every use, the technician confirms the CT12A reading on the Verification Bar falls within the acceptable tolerance marked on the bar's identification tag. A reading outside tolerance is a go/no-go condition — the instrument must be sent for recertification before use on any aircraft cable. The Verification Bar itself carries the same annual recertification requirement as the instrument and must be returned for service on the same cycle.

What Calibration Documentation Must Show. Each new or recertified 102-03120 unit ships with a Certificate of Calibration that lists the calibration date, the due date for the next recertification, and the serial number of the specific unit. Calibration records for the Verification Bar should be maintained separately with the same serial number, calibration date, and next due date. For programs operating under AS9100 or similar quality management systems, maintain records for both the CT12A and Verification Bar as a matched set — they function as a single calibrated measurement system, not two independent items.

Pilot John International's ISO 17025-accredited calibration laboratory performs recertification services for the aircraft cable tensiometers, issuing fully documented calibration certificates for both the instrument and the Verification Bar upon completion. PJi's lab delivers the documented traceability that FAA-regulated programs, OEM quality requirements, DOD contracts, and ISO 9001/AS9100 systems demand — with the turnaround efficiency that keeps your instruments in service. Asked December 8, 2025
Question:
What is the Barfield 102-03120 and how does it differ from the 102-03108?
Answer:

Both are CT12A Digital Multi-Cable Tensiometers using identical electronics, display features, and measurement modes. The 102-03120 is calibrated for five cable sizes from 1/16" through 3/16". The 102-03108 extends that coverage to 1/4", adding the 7/32" and 1/4" cable sizes. Choose the 102-03120 when all cable sizes on the aircraft fall within 1/16"–3/16"; choose the 102-03108 when 7/32" or 1/4" cables are also in scope.

Asked May 17, 2026
Question:
What is Averaging Mode and why does it matter on the 102-03120?
Answer:

Averaging Mode causes the CT12A to automatically take three consecutive tension readings and display their average. This directly compensates for cable surface variation — the uneven surface of multi-strand cables causes small reading differences between positions on the same cable at the same tension. The T5 series service manual recommends manually taking three to five readings and averaging them for best accuracy; the CT12A's Averaging Mode performs that process automatically. Standard Mode remains available for single-point readings when speed is the priority.

Asked May 17, 2026
Question:
an the Verification Bar from one CT12A be used with a different CT12A unit?
Answer:

No. Each Verification Bar is serial-matched to a specific CT12A instrument and must only be used with that unit. Using a non-matched Verification Bar produces unreliable accuracy verification results. The Verification Bar and the CT12A together form a single calibrated measurement system — they must always be used together and recertified together on the same annual cycle.

Asked May 17, 2026
Question:
What cable types is the 102-03120 calibrated for?
Answer:

The 102-03120 is calibrated for standard multi-strand non-jacketed aircraft cables conforming to MIL-DTL-83420 Type I, Composition A — carbon steel with zinc or tin coatings. It is not appropriate for plastic-coated or jacketed Type II cables without a custom calibration performed by Barfield. Custom calibrations for other cable constructions are available from Barfield for an additional charge.

Asked May 17, 2026
Question:
How does the 102-03120 compare to the Pacific Scientific T5-2002-101-00 for the same cable sizes?
Answer:

Both cover 1/16"–1/4" (the T5-2002-101-00 goes to 1/4"; the 102-03120 covers 1/16"–3/16"), but the measurement approach is fundamentally different. The T5-2002-101-00 is a mechanical dial instrument requiring riser selection and calibration chart conversion. The 102-03120 provides a direct digital readout with Averaging Mode, NIST-traceable documentation, and an integrated temperature display. The T5-2002-101-00 requires no battery and no annual calibration of a digital system; the 102-03120 requires annual recertification of both the instrument and Verification Bar at an approved facility. Both are appropriate for different program requirements — the CT12A for OEM-compliance and digital precision programs, the T5 for lower overhead mechanical measurement.
