QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
The fully retractable hydraulic running gear allows technicians to quickly adjust the towbar height for a secure and ergonomic connection to the aircraft nose gear. This adjustability speeds setup and reduces strain on personnel during daily operations. It also accommodates small variations in nose gear height across different wide-body models.
The built-in safety lock system helps prevent the towbar from inadvertently separating from the aircraft during pushback or towing maneuvers. This provides an additional layer of security beyond the standard shear bolt connection. A secure locking mechanism reduces the risk of equipment damage or injury to ground personnel.
The 8” O.D. x 8’ structural high-strength steel tube offers rigidity and durability needed for towing heavy wide-body aircraft. This robust construction helps the towbar withstand repeated towing loads and environmental stress. A durable steel tube also resists bending and fatigue over multiple years of service.
Shear bolts are designed to protect both the towbar and the aircraft by deforming under extreme load instead of causing structural damage. In the event of an excessive load, bolts fail at a predefined point, minimizing damage risk. The 15F2397 towbar includes an extra set of shear bolts to help minimize downtime if replacements are needed.
The towbar comes standard with pneumatic tires, which absorb shocks and make maneuvering on uneven ramp surfaces easier. Alternative solid tire options are also available and can reduce maintenance in high-use environments. Pneumatic tires provide better cushioning, while solid tires offer rugged, low-maintenance service.
Some pushback tractors have designs or nose profiles that require a longer reach to clear the aircraft nose without interference. In those cases, alternative Clyde models such as the 15F3045 are offered to ensure safe clearance. Choosing the correct towbar length prevents accidental contact and improves ergonomic handling during pushback.
Regular inspection and maintenance – such as checking shear bolts, greasing pivot points, and verifying hydraulic gear operation – help ensure long service life. Pneumatic tire pressure should be checked and maintained at the recommended levels to minimize wear. Visually inspect the safety lock system and connection points before each use to prevent unexpected failures.
Designed for commercial twin-aisle aircraft, the Clyde 15F2397 encourages safe, controlled pushback and tow maneuvers when properly matched with compatible tractors and aircraft nose gear. Its safety lock system, shear protection, and robust construction reduce the risk of accidental disconnection or equipment damage. Proper training on attachment and detachment procedures further enhances ramp safety.
