Shockbox SB24-03-835 – BFG Capacitance Test Box for PS-835, PS-850 & PS-855 Emergency Power Supplies

The Shockbox SB24-03-835 BFG Capacitance Test Box is a purpose-built, manually operated test unit designed specifically to perform capacitance and discharge checks on Jet/BFGoodrich/L3 Communications PS-835, PS-850, and PS-855 standby emergency power supplies. Conceived from the ground up to be affordable enough for the smallest maintenance shops and straightforward enough for any technician to operate, it has become a trusted bench tool at MROs, charter operators, and avionics service centers that support business jet fleets where these units are commonly installed.

Unlike software-driven analyzers that require a connected PC and custom programs, the SB24-03-835 keeps the test process entirely in the technician's hands — plug in, flip the selector switch to TEST, and start a stopwatch. The correct mating connector plugs directly into the back of PS-835, PS-850, and PS-855 units, eliminating the need for adapter harnesses or custom wiring. Front-panel jacks also allow connection to a standard benchtop DC power supply so technicians can charge the power supply prior to or between tests without needing additional equipment.

How It Works

The SB24-03-835 applies the correct discharge load to the power supply under test, allowing the technician to monitor terminal voltage against elapsed time and verify capacity per the applicable OEM component maintenance manual or maintenance manual procedure. The process requires no software, no PC connection, and no automated sequencing — just a stopwatch and the technician's direct observation of the voltage under load. This manual approach gives experienced technicians full visibility and control over the test, and makes the unit equally effective as a training and demonstration platform where a clear, visible test process is preferred over automated pass/fail readouts.

When testing is complete, the same front-panel jacks used for voltage monitoring allow the unit to be connected to a benchtop DC power supply to recharge the power supply back to service-ready state before reinstallation.

Compatible Power Supplies

These power supplies are commonly found in Beechjet 400/400A, Learjet, Mitsubishi MU-300, and various other business jet and turboprop aircraft. Facilities supporting any of these platforms benefit from having a dedicated, in-house test capability rather than shipping units to outside vendors for routine capacitance checks.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Question:
What is the ShockBox BFG Capacitance Test Box used for?
Answer:

The ShockBox BFG Capacitance Test Box is a dedicated test unit designed to measure the true capacitance and performance of PS-835, PS-850, and PS-855 standby power supply batteries under controlled load conditions. Rather than relying on simple voltage checks, this test box provides a more accurate assessment of how a battery will perform under real load demands. It’s commonly used in aircraft maintenance shops and avionics labs where battery reliability is critical. Having precise test data helps maintenance teams make informed decisions about battery serviceability and replacement timing.

Asked January 26, 2026
Question:
How does the BFG Capacitance Test Box improve battery maintenance workflows?
Answer:

By providing standardized capacitance testing in a single, repeatable process, the BFG Capacitance Test Box helps technicians avoid the inconsistency often associated with manual or improvised testing methods. The unit’s design allows for quick connection and testing of PS-series batteries, reducing setup time and minimizing technician effort. This means shops can test more batteries in less time with consistent results, improving throughput and reducing bottlenecks in routine maintenance. Better workflow efficiency also helps teams stay ahead of service deadlines and reduce aircraft downtime.

Asked January 26, 2026
Question:
What types of batteries are compatible with this test box?
Answer:

The SB24-03-835 is engineered specifically for BFG PS-835, PS-850, and PS-855 batteries, which are common standby and emergency power supplies used in aviation and ground support applications. These battery models share similar electrical characteristics and connector styles, making the test box’s interface ideally matched for accurate diagnostics. Using a test box tailored to this family of batteries helps ensure reliable electrical contact and measurement fidelity. Technicians should always verify compatibility with other battery types before attempting a test.

Asked January 26, 2026
Question:
Why is capacitance testing more informative than simple voltage checks?
Answer:

Capacitance testing measures a battery's actual energy storage capability by applying a controlled load and observing how it responds over time, thereby revealing its usable capacity. In contrast, a voltage check only shows open-circuit voltage, which can be misleading – a battery may show acceptable voltage levels but still lack sufficient stored energy to sustain a load. The BFG Capacitance Test Box’s measurements offer insight into how well the battery will perform under real operational conditions, making it a more predictive tool for maintenance decisions. This leads to safer, more reliable battery service outcomes.

Asked January 26, 2026
Question:
How does this test box help reduce aircraft downtime?
Answer:

Routine capacitance testing with the BFG test box enables early identification of weak or degraded batteries before they fail in service. Identifying problematic batteries during scheduled maintenance allows proactive replacement rather than reactive repair after a failure, which could ground an aircraft unexpectedly. This proactive approach supports a more predictable maintenance schedule and reduces unplanned downtime for aircraft in active fleets. Over time, it helps maintenance teams optimize inventory and reduce emergency part procurement.

Asked January 26, 2026
Question:
Can this test box support maintenance documentation and compliance?
Answer:

Yes. The ShockBox BFG Capacitance Test Box produces clear, quantifiable results that can be recorded in maintenance logs and compliance reports. Detailed reports showing test conditions and results offer traceable proof that batteries were tested under standardized conditions, which is valuable for audits, inspections, and regulatory compliance. Having documented evidence of battery health testing also supports quality assurance programs and helps maintenance teams justify service decisions during reviews. Accurate documentation contributes to a robust safety culture.

Asked January 26, 2026
Question:
How does the design of this test box protect against connection errors?
Answer:

The BFG Capacitance Test Box features intuitive connectors and clearly labeled interfaces designed specifically for compatible PS-series batteries, reducing the risk of mis-mating or pin misalignment. This reduces technician setup errors, which can otherwise lead to inaccurate test results or even damage to battery terminals and harnesses. By streamlining the connection process, the test box helps ensure reliable electrical contact, supporting accurate measurement. This design also promotes safer, more efficient maintenance routines.

Asked January 26, 2026
Question:
Is specialized training required to use the SB24-03-835?
Answer:

While no formal certification is required to operate the test box, technicians should be familiar with basic battery safety protocols, bench testing procedures, and shop workflows to use it effectively. The ShockBox unit’s straightforward design and aviation-specific interface make it easy to integrate into existing maintenance procedures. Most maintenance professionals with experience in battery diagnostics or aircraft electrical systems will find the test box intuitive to use. However, following published test procedures and safety guidance remains essential.

Asked January 26, 2026
Question:
How does the BFG Capacitance Test Box compare to general-purpose battery testers?
Answer:

General-purpose battery testers may offer basic impedance or voltage testing but often lack the ability to perform controlled load capacitance tests tailored to specific battery families. The ShockBox BFG test box is purpose-built for the PS-835, PS-850, and PS-855 line, with connectors, load profiles, and test parameters designed for accurate, repeatable performance evaluations of those batteries. This specialization makes it more reliable and relevant for aviation battery maintenance than generic tools. It also helps maintenance teams follow OEM-aligned procedures more precisely.

Asked January 26, 2026
Question:
Can the test box be used outside of aviation maintenance?
Answer:

Although designed for aviation standby power systems, the BFG Capacitance Test Box’s controlled load and capacitance measurement capability can also be useful for industrial or commercial standby power batteries that share similar form factors and electrical characteristics. Facilities that manage mixed equipment fleets may leverage the test box for those compatible units, though technicians should always verify electrical load and connector compatibility before testing non-aviation batteries. Using the box outside its standard application still demands attention to safety and manufacturer guidance.
