Ordering process was easy, all contacts at Pilot John were all helpful and provided required information quickly.

Product works as expected, and is being used on a regular basis with no issues (used 1 month). Price was better than manufacturer and was in stock, which was important for these.

Crates that we received the Jacks in were old and worn. Would expect new crates considering the price paid.

These jacks are great. The 2 different length adapters make them versatile. I like how short they are when fully closed, we can get under aircraft on low gear, and then use them on an aircraft on high gear. They are very smooth when jacking. The wheels and locks are an added help. The base is nice and heavy and stable.

Question:
What type of hydraulic fluid does the Tronair 02-0511C0132 tripod jack use?
Answer:

The Tronair 5-ton tripod jack is designed for use with MIL-PRF-5606 hydraulic fluid, a widely accepted aviation-grade lubricant known for its reliability and temperature stability. This fluid ensures smooth and safe operation of the jack’s hydraulic system. It’s important to maintain proper fluid levels before each use and avoid contamination by following the correct handling procedures. Always consult the included SDS and local regulations when disposing of used fluid.

Asked July 30, 2025
Question:
Can this 5-ton jack be used in all weather conditions?
Answer:

Yes, the jack is engineered to perform within a broad temperature range of -4°F to 122°F (-20°C to 50°C), making it suitable for most hangar and ramp environments. However, during extreme conditions – especially cold weather – fluid viscosity and seal performance should be closely monitored. Protective measures, like covering the jack’s top during washing or wet conditions, are recommended to maintain its integrity and prevent corrosion.

Asked July 30, 2025
Question:
What safety features are built into the Tronair 5-ton tripod jack?
Answer:

The jack includes multiple user-operated and automatic safety mechanisms. The most critical is the ram locknut, which must be engaged during lifting to prevent unintentional descent in the event of hydraulic failure. A pressure relief valve protects against overload, and a locknut retaining ring ensures the nut cannot accidentally unscrew. When used properly, these features work together to prevent personal injury and aircraft damage.

Asked July 30, 2025
Question:
What is the best way to transport and store the jack safely?
Answer:

Relatively lightweight at 100 lbs (45.4 kg), the jack is designed for easy mobility – whether rolled manually on its built-in casters or lifted using a crane via the top tripod or a forklift under the base. For proper storage, ensure the ram is fully retracted to protect the internal components. If storing the jack outdoors, cover it with a waterproof tarp or canvas to prevent moisture intrusion. Always store the unit in a clean, dry area within the recommended temperature range to avoid corrosion, seal damage, or degradation of hydraulic components.

Asked July 30, 2025
Question:
What maintenance is recommended for long-term reliability?
Answer:

Tronair recommends a 90-day inspection cycle and an annual load test at 110% of rated capacity. Routine service includes cleaning, fluid checks, O-ring replacements, and exercising the seals by fully extending and retracting the rams. If unused for extended periods, it's critical to spray the rams with a rust-inhibiting lubricant like LPS to protect against corrosion. Proper servicing extends the jack’s operational life and ensures safety in every lift.

Asked July 30, 2025
Question:
What is the difference between the two mechanical extensions included?
Answer:

The jack comes with two mechanical extensions – the R-1013-01 and the R-1012-01 – which differ in height by approximately 6.1”. These extensions allow the jack to adapt to different aircraft jacking points, with maximum achievable heights of 26.6” or 32.7”, respectively. Choosing the right extension is essential for safe lifting and maintaining the proper reach under various airframes.

Asked July 30, 2025
Question:
What is the proper method for collapsing the rams after use?
Answer:

To safely collapse the rams, you must add a minimum 50-lb load to ensure proper sequencing from the smallest to largest ram. This helps avoid mis-staging, which could create dangerous pinch points. Always keep fingers and hands clear of the ram locknuts, and be cautious when releasing the pump valve. These steps help protect both the jack and operator during the lowering process.

Asked July 30, 2025
Question:
What are the signs of wear or damage that should not be ignored?
Answer:

During inspections, look for deformation or damage to the locking pin, ram protection ring, or any other visible components. Common red flags include fluid leaks, cracked threads, missing pin washers, or dented legs, all of which can compromise the jack's structural integrity. Any component found to be damaged should be replaced immediately using OEM parts only. Using the jack in a compromised condition poses a serious risk of collapse or failure.
