The Brackett Aircraft Company (BAC) BDW-245B-1801 Hydraulic Ground Wheel is an OEM ground handling wheel designed for select Bell helicopters, including the Bell 204, 205, 212, 222, 230, 412, UH-1, and AH-1 series. This updated “B” model replaces the earlier “A” version and offers improved lift capability, increased gross weight capacity, and a spring-loaded front snap pin for faster, more secure installation. Each wheel assembly is sold individually; two are required for a complete set.

Built for durability and dependable ground handling, the BDW-245B-1801 features an 8-ton hydraulic jack that provides approximately 4" of skid lift for easier aircraft movement during maintenance or repositioning. Dual 18" × 5.5" tires rated at 105 PSI support smooth maneuverability, while the rugged orange powder-coated frame enhances corrosion resistance and visibility in busy hangar environments. The assembly accommodates 4" skid tubes and fits 16.41" and 17.875" attachment point centers.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Question:
What is the primary purpose of the BAC BDW-245B-1801 hydraulic ground wheel?
Answer:

The Brackett Aircraft Company BDW-245B-1801 hydraulic ground wheel is designed to help maintenance crews safely move skid-equipped helicopters on the ground. By lifting the helicopter skids slightly off the surface, the wheels allow technicians to reposition the aircraft within hangars or maintenance areas without having to start the engine. This improves efficiency during inspections, storage adjustments, and routine maintenance tasks.

Asked March 11, 2026
Question:
Why are hydraulic ground wheels commonly used for helicopter ground handling?
Answer:

Hydraulic ground wheels provide a controlled method of lifting and supporting helicopter skids while allowing smooth movement across flat surfaces. Unlike fixed dollies, the hydraulic lift mechanism allows technicians to raise the helicopter slightly before rolling it into position. This reduces strain on personnel and helps prevent damage to skid tubes or hangar floors during repositioning.

Asked March 11, 2026
Question:
What does the National Stock Number (NSN) indicate for this ground wheel?
Answer:

The BDW-245B-1801 hydraulic ground wheel carries the National Stock Number 1730-01-544-0231, which identifies it within the NATO supply system. An NSN allows military units and government agencies to easily procure the equipment through standardized logistics channels. This designation also confirms the product’s acceptance for use in military aviation maintenance environments.

Asked March 11, 2026
Question:
How many ground wheels are required to move a helicopter?
Answer:

A complete ground handling setup typically requires two hydraulic ground wheels – one installed on each side of the helicopter’s skid landing gear. Once both wheels are properly attached and the skids are lifted, the helicopter can be safely rolled across smooth surfaces. Using two wheels ensures balanced support and stable ground movement.

Asked March 11, 2026
Question:
Why is it important to remove ground wheels before flight?
Answer:

Ground handling wheels are strictly intended for moving helicopters while they are parked or undergoing maintenance. They must be removed before flight to ensure the aircraft’s landing gear is properly configured for takeoff and landing. Leaving the ground wheels installed could compromise flight safety and aircraft performance.

Asked March 11, 2026
Question:
How does the BDW-245B-1801 help protect helicopter landing gear during ground movement?
Answer:

Using hydraulic ground wheels helps reduce stress on skid tubes by distributing the load through the wheel assembly rather than dragging the skids across surfaces. This minimizes wear on the skid shoes and prevents damage to painted or polished surfaces. It also helps protect hangar floors and ramps from scraping or gouging.

Asked March 11, 2026
Question:
What maintenance practices help extend the life of hydraulic ground wheels?
Answer:

Routine inspection and basic maintenance help keep hydraulic ground wheels operating smoothly. Technicians should regularly check the hydraulic jack, tire condition, mounting hardware, and frame components for signs of wear or damage. Keeping the wheels properly inflated and ensuring the hydraulic system operates correctly helps extend service life.

Asked March 11, 2026
Question:
Why are ground handling wheels especially useful in hangar environments?
Answer:

Inside a hangar, space is often limited, and helicopters may need to be repositioned frequently for maintenance access. Hydraulic ground wheels allow technicians to maneuver aircraft precisely without starting the engine or using heavy towing equipment. This makes them an efficient solution for maintenance facilities and helicopter operators.

Asked March 11, 2026
Question:
What types of operators commonly use hydraulic ground handling wheels?
Answer:

Hydraulic ground wheels are widely used by helicopter maintenance facilities, flight departments, military units, and helicopter service centers. They are particularly valuable for operators managing multiple skid-equipped helicopters in confined spaces. Maintenance crews rely on them to safely reposition aircraft during inspections, repairs, and storage adjustments.

Asked March 11, 2026
Question:
How does the BDW-245B-1801 support preventative maintenance practices?
Answer:

Ground handling wheels make it easier for technicians to position helicopters where maintenance access is needed. Being able to move the aircraft quickly and safely helps streamline inspections, cleaning, and servicing tasks. This flexibility supports efficient preventative maintenance programs and reduces overall aircraft downtime.
