The Tronair 11-2820-0000 is a diesel-powered ground power unit (GPU) designed to serve as a 28.5V DC power source for parked aircraft. The unit provides 600 amps of continuous power for aircraft servicing and up to 2,000 amps peak for starting. The Current Limit (Soft Start) feature allows the user to select current limits for operations requiring a current limit below the maximum output.

This GPU must run on ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel ONLY! The fuel filter is a disposable, spin-on type and must be changed every 500 hours of running time.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Question:
Is weather cover protection available for this unit?
Answer:

No, the manufacturer does not offer weather cover protection for this ground power unit. The sheet metal enclosure would be considered protection from the weather to safeguard the unit's engine/generator and electrical components.

Asked August 13, 2024
Question:
What size output cable is included on this unit?
Answer:

This unit comes standard with a 32' (9.75 m) 4/0, voltage-sensing 12/3 AWG cable.

Asked December 10, 2024
Question:
Does this unit have overcurrent protection?
Answer:

Yes! This unit features built-in overcurrent protection to safeguard both the ground power unit and connected aircraft systems. This feature helps prevent potential damage caused by electrical surges or excessive power draw.

Asked December 10, 2024
Question:
What is the purpose of the scrub brake system on this unit?
Answer:

The scrub brake system on this GPU is designed to provide stability and control during operation and storage. It helps prevent the unit from rolling or moving unintentionally, ensuring safety when the GPU is stationed near aircraft or other ground support equipment.

This braking mechanism is particularly important during power delivery to aircraft, as any movement could compromise the connection or pose risks to personnel. The scrub brake system adds an essential layer of operational safety and convenience for ground crews.

Asked December 10, 2024
Question:
What function does the cable interlock protection circuit serve on this unit?
Answer:

The cable interlock protection circuit ensures safe and secure operation by preventing the GPU from powering on when the output cable is not properly connected. This safety feature protects both the equipment and the aircraft by reducing the risk of accidental power surges or disconnections during operation. It also minimizes potential damage to the GPU or connected systems, ensuring reliable and consistent power delivery. This added layer of protection enhances operational safety for ground crews and aircraft systems.

Asked December 10, 2024
Question:
How does the timed engine shutdown feature work on this GPU?
Answer:

The timed engine shutdown feature on this unit is designed to automatically shut off the engine after a set period of inactivity. If the GPU detects no demand for power or operation within a predefined timeframe, the system safely powers down the engine to conserve fuel and reduce wear and tear on the equipment. This feature enhances efficiency and safety by preventing unnecessary operation, lowering operational costs, and minimizing environmental impact. It is particularly useful in busy ground operations, ensuring the GPU is not left running unintentionally.

Asked December 10, 2024
Question:
How often should this GPU be inspected to ensure safe operation?
Answer:

The Tronair 11-2820-0000 GPU should be inspected daily or before each use to ensure safe and reliable operation. Routine inspections should include checking for visible damage, ensuring all connections and cables are secure, and verifying fluid levels such as oil and coolant.

Additionally, scheduled maintenance intervals, typically recommended in the operator's manual, should include more in-depth checks, such as inspecting the filters, electrical systems, and overall engine condition.

Regular inspections not only ensure safe operation but also help identify potential issues early, minimizing downtime and costly repairs. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for inspection frequency and procedures.

Asked December 10, 2024
Question:
What spare parts are recommended to keep on hand for this unit?
Answer:

For the 11-2820-0000 GPU, Tronair recommends keeping a stock of critical spare parts to ensure minimal downtime and uninterrrupted operation. These include:

  • H-5260 – V-Belt
  • EC-1934 28.5V DC Output Cable
  • EC-3149 Battery
  • EC-3680 – Alternator
  • H-4000Wheel/Tire
  • H-5262Oil Filter
  • H-5263 – Fuel Filter Element
  • H-5264 – Secondary Air Element
  • H-5265 – Primary Air Element
  • H-5266 – Injector Assembly
  • H-5267 – Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve
  • H-5268 – Starter
  • H-5269 – Water Pump
  • H-5270 – Thermostat
  • H-5271 – Auto Tensioner

If you need to order any of these replacement parts, please contact our aviation specialists for assistance.

Asked December 10, 2024
Question:
What measures should be taken to protect the unit during long-term storage?
Answer:

Special precautions are necessary to protect the GPU during long-term storage. It is recommended that the unit be stored in a building that is heated during winter months. Moisture-absorbing chemicals should be placed inside the unit in climates where there is excessive dampness.

To further ensure the unit's components remain in good condition during storage, follow these measures:

  • Clean the Unit Thoroughly: Remove any dirt, grease, or debris from the GPU to prevent corrosion and buildup during storage.
  • Drain Fuel and Fluids: Drain the fuel system to avoid deterioration or gumming, and top off oil and coolant to minimize internal rusting or contamination.
  • Protect the Electrical Components: Disconnect the battery and store it separately in a cool, dry place. Ensure all electrical connections are clean and secure, and protect exposed terminals with dielectric grease or covers.
  • Elevate Tires and Move Periodically: If the unit has wheels, use wheel blocks or jacks to relieve pressure and prevent flat spots. Roll the GPU occasionally to avoid tire degradation.
  • Inspect and Secure Hoses and Cables: Ensure hoses and cables are free of kinks, cracks, or damage. Coil cables neatly and cover them to prevent environmental damage.
  • Prevent Pest Infestation: Seal any openings to prevent pests from nesting inside the unit.
  • Periodic Checks: Perform periodic inspections, such as starting the engine briefly and rotating components, to ensure functionality is preserved.

These precautions will help ensure that the GPU remains operational and ready for use when removed from storage.

Asked December 10, 2024
Question:
Does the GPU battery maintain power to the aircraft if the diesel engine loses power during a turbine start?
Answer:

No, if the diesel engine loses power, the 24V battery boosting system on the Tronair 11-2820-0000 GPU will be disabled, meaning it will not maintain amperage to the aircraft. This prevents the GPU from continuing to supply power during the turbine start, which could lead to a hot start if proper precautions aren't taken.
