The Pioneer in Lithium-Ion Battery Fire Containment Technology
HOT-STOP® ‘L’ Fire Containment Bags are engineered to fully contain fires, explosions, and toxic smoke emissions from lithium-ion battery-powered devices occurring onboard aircraft or in helicopters.
The HOT-STOP® ‘L’ Evo ELT Battery Fire Containment Bag is made specifically for portable ELTs. As ELT battery sizes can vary, please provide the exact specifications of your battery at the time of placing your order. Exterior dimensions: 14” x 10”.
What Makes HOT-STOP® ‘L’ Special?
HOT-STOP® ‘L’ bags have achieved FIREPROOF status by an FAA-registered laboratory. The felt inner core has a melting point of 3,200°F. This core is sandwiched between two outer layers – each with a 2,080°F melting point – that are proven to absorb energy and fire. Military-grade zipper technology adds an airtight layer of protection by eliminating the escape of toxic smoke, gases, carcinogens, and other harmful emissions.
Storage
Made of lightweight, pliable firefighting materials, HOT-STOP® ‘L’ bags are easy to fold and store in confined spaces, such as the cockpit or cabin of your aircraft. All HOT-STOP® ‘L’ containment bags are 1” to 2.5” thick and weigh just 4 to 8 lbs.
Deployment
HOT-STOP® ‘L’ bags are simple and intuitive to deploy – no matter which size you choose. It only takes 5 to 6 easy steps, and no aqueous liquids are required.
Low Maintenance
Minimal periodic maintenance is required, primarily consisting of periodic visual inspections.
Carry-On
HOT-STOP® ‘L’ bags are considered Carry-On Emergency Safety Equipment for aircraft.
Lifetime Replacement Warranty
If the bag is ever deployed to contain a thermal runaway of a lithium-ion powered device, the manufacturer will replace it for free.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
For proper readiness, the HOT-STOP® ‘L’ ELT containment bag should be stored unzipped with the pull strap positioned over the hook-and-loop closure. This staging method allows the bag to be deployed quickly during a lithium-ion battery incident involving an emergency locator transmitter.
Because the bag is made from flexible fire-resistant materials, it can be stored compactly in cockpit or cabin equipment compartments where emergency safety gear is easily accessible. Operators should periodically inspect the zipper and apply a light beeswax lubricant to maintain smooth operation.
To deploy the bag, personnel should retrieve the containment kit and put on protective gloves if available. The ELT or damaged ELT battery should then be carefully placed inside the bag beneath the internal baffle system.
Next, pull the red “PULL” tab to close the hook-and-loop seam and zip the bag fully until the zipper reaches the stopper. Properly sealing the bag helps contain heat, flames, and smoke generated during a lithium-ion battery thermal runaway event.
Yes. HOT-STOP® ‘L’ fire containment bags are backed by a lifetime replacement warranty if the bag is deployed during an actual lithium-ion battery thermal runaway incident.
After such an event, operators must complete an incident report and return the used bag to the manufacturer for evaluation and replacement. This warranty policy demonstrates the manufacturer’s confidence in the containment system.
The HOT-STOP® ‘L’ containment system has undergone burn testing conducted by FAA-registered laboratories. Official burn test certificates and supporting documentation are available through the manufacturer.
These tests confirm the bag’s ability to withstand the extreme heat, pressure bursts, and smoke associated with lithium-ion battery fires. Operators can use this documentation during safety audits or regulatory compliance reviews.
The HOT-STOP® ‘L’ ELT containment bag is constructed with multiple layers of fire-resistant fabric, an airtight zipper system, and internal baffles. These features help contain flames, heat, and smoke generated during a battery thermal runaway event.
Once sealed, the bag restricts oxygen exposure and prevents hazardous fumes from spreading inside the aircraft cabin or maintenance area. Proper closure of the zipper and hook-and-loop seam is critical for maintaining containment performance.
Yes. The HOT-STOP® ‘L’ ELT containment bag is widely used by aircraft maintenance teams, avionics technicians, and flight departments to manage potential lithium-ion battery hazards associated with emergency locator transmitters. It provides a controlled method for isolating overheating ELTs or batteries during maintenance inspections, removal procedures, or onboard safety events.
Yes. HOT-STOP® ‘L’ containment bags incorporate shielding materials designed to limit radio frequency signals from devices placed inside the bag.
This feature can help prevent a malfunctioning ELT from transmitting signals while the device is safely contained, reducing interference and helping stabilize the situation during a battery incident.
Operators should periodically inspect the zipper teeth, zipper stitching, pull-tab strap, and outer fire-resistant shell for signs of wear, cuts, or abrasions. If any damage is detected that could affect the bag’s sealing ability or structural integrity, the bag should be removed from service and returned for repair or replacement. Storage pouches and carrying components should also be checked for damage.
The containment bag is designed for quick and intuitive deployment during an emergency. However, operators are encouraged to review the manufacturer’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) videos and guidance materials.
Many aviation maintenance organizations incorporate HOT-STOP® ‘L’ procedures into technician training programs to ensure personnel can respond quickly to lithium-ion battery incidents involving ELTs.
Maintenance requirements are minimal. Operators should perform routine visual inspections and occasionally lubricate the zipper with beeswax to ensure smooth operation. The bag should also be stored clean, dry, and unzipped so it remains ready for immediate deployment.
HOT-STOP® ‘L’ containment bags are designed for single-event use when deployed during an actual lithium-ion battery thermal runaway. After such an incident, the bag must be returned under the lifetime replacement warranty program. If the bag has not been used in an incident and remains undamaged, it may continue to remain in service or be used for training demonstrations.
The ELT containment bag is commonly used in aircraft maintenance facilities, avionics shops, commercial aviation operations, business aviation, and military aviation. It helps technicians and flight crews manage the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries used in modern emergency locator transmitters and other avionics equipment.
Because fire containment bags are typically classified as loose tools or onboard safety equipment, a Certificate of Conformance (CofC) is not normally required. However, a CofC can be issued upon request if an operator requires documentation for procurement records or internal compliance procedures.
