The Turtleback Aircraft Grounding Equipment System adds layers of convenience, durability, and safety when bonding aircraft and ground support equipment to a hangar’s floor grid.
The low-profile structure lets you easily leave grounding cables securely connected throughout daily maintenance and ground handling activities.
Keep your cable connections lasting longer with the protection of the Turtleback. More importantly, it greatly reduces cables disconnecting from the hangar floor during everyday activity, while also reducing trip hazards. Turtlebacks bring aircraft static grounding into the twenty-first century.
Benefits
- Reduces trip hazards caused by the current method for grounding aircraft
- Keeps cables secure to avoid unintentional cable disconnection
- Convenience to leave grounding cables connected for normal maintenance operations and towing
Application
Intended for use on indoor hangar floors, Turtlebacks enhance convenience and safety in everyday hangar operations. Quickly install a Turtleback and connect up to four aircraft or support equipment units to your hangar grid.
Installation
The Turtleback is a 12" low-profile disc that sits just under 2" above the hangar floor. The disc's height and taper allow aircraft and GSE to roll over easily while providing a virtually trip-free surface for maintainers and pilots alike. A jumper extends from a metal “spider” beneath, allowing easy attachment to the electrode on the floor.
The Turtleback can then be slid over the grounding point, ready for attachment to the hangar floor. Four stainless fasteners provide secure mounting to concrete anchors. Standard clamp connectors can be swapped for the provided aircraft bayonet plugs, and you are all set.
Manufacturing
Manufactured and assembled in the United States, Turtleback is a veteran-owned company based in North Carolina. The shell is made from durable 6-6 nylon. The metal spider is made from .025 5052-H32 aluminum with a clear chromate finish. Female-owned R&B Electronics provides Turtleback's connectors, with both connectors already being assigned NSNs. All attaching hardware is commercially available.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
The manufacturer can provide material certifications for key components, including the male and female connectors, jumpers, internal spider, and shell. Any additional commercially available parts typically do not require certifications.
During production, the equipment is tested using resistance (ohms) checks with a calibrated meter from the connector to the jumper ring. NFPA guidance calls for 25 ohms or less and recommends 5 ohms or less for grounding continuity. The TB-01 system typically measures around 1.8 ohms, supporting reliable aircraft grounding performance.
Yes. In addition to the standard connection method, grounding rods can be drilled and tapped to secure them with a screw. If you’d like to explore this option, contact your PJi sales representative for details and configuration guidance.
