The ACES Systems 10-400-0176 is a 10-ft. roll of High-Gain Reflective Tape used to reflect the PhotoTach beam in propeller, rotary, and fan/turbine balancing applications.

This 1" wide, 3M 7610 high-gain reflective tape works great with photoelectric sensors and is recommended for use in all balance applications using ACES Systems balancers and analyzers.

This high-gain reflective tape is designed for use in video motion-capture systems and photoelectric sensors. This tape is a thin (4 mm), highly conformable, plastic-based reflective film that offers the highest retro-reflectivity available in a spherical lens tape.  It also has a peel-off liner, conforms easily to most surfaces, and is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Question:
What is 10-400-0176 reflective tape used for?
Answer:

ACES Systems' 10-400-0176 High-Gain Reflective Tape is used to reflect the PhotoTach beam in propeller, rotary, and fan/turbine balancing setups. It’s compatible with photoelectric sensors and video motion capture systems, making it a key consumable in vibration and balance measurement workflows.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
What material and adhesive properties does the tape have?
Answer:

This tape is constructed from thin, 3M 7610 plastic-based reflective film, offering excellent retroreflectivity. It features a peel-off liner and a strong yet conformable adhesive backing that adheres well to curved or flat surfaces.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
Why is high reflectivity important for vibration sensing?
Answer:

High gain reflectivity ensures that the PhotoTach beam is reliably returned to the sensor, providing a sharp signal with minimal noise. That clarity is essential in balancing tasks to distinguish fine vibration or imbalance characteristics. Lower reflectivity might lead to weak or erratic readings.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
How wide and long is each roll of the tape?
Answer:

Each roll of 10-400-0176 tape is 1” wide and 10 feet (3 meters) in length, giving technicians ample tape to cut and apply to various blade surfaces or rotating components.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
Can the tape be used both indoors and outdoors?
Answer:

Yes. This reflective tape is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, thanks to its plastic-based film and durable finish that withstands ambient conditions. Its design ensures performance in hangars or outdoors on flight lines.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
How thin is the tape, and why does that matter?
Answer:

At just 0.16” (4 mm) thickness, the tape is very thin and minimally intrusive, which helps avoid adding imbalance or altering aerodynamic behavior on propeller blades. Its thinness also helps it conform to curved surfaces without wrinkling or peeling.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
How should the surface be prepared before applying the tape?
Answer:

Before application, the blade or rotor surface must be clean, dry, and free of oils, grease, or debris. Press out any air bubbles or creases so the edges lie flat. If peeling or lifting is a problem, applying a thin coat of clear nail polish to the edges can help secure adhesion.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
What happens if the reflective tape starts peeling?
Answer:

If the tape loosens during the job, the reflected beam may be disrupted, causing poor data or signal dropouts. To prevent that, ensure the adhesion is secure and the edges are fully pressed down. If needed, reinforce edges with a narrow protective coating (e.g., clear lacquer) to hold the tape firmly in place.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
Is the tape suitable for all balancing analyzers?
Answer:

Yes, the High-Gain Reflective Tape is specifically designed for use with ACES Systems balancers and analyzers, but it also works with any system that utilizes PhotoTach or photoelectric sensors. Its high reflectivity and standard width make it broadly compatible across rotor balancing workflows.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
How many strips can a single roll provide?
Answer:

A 10-foot roll of 1” tape provides up to 120 one-inch strips, each one foot in length, or fewer longer strips, depending on the use. This allows for multiple applications per roll, making it cost-effective for repeated balancing tasks.

Asked October 16, 2025
Question:
What is the shelf life or expiration date of this reflective tape?
Answer:

The ACES Systems 10-400-0176 – 1” high-gain reflective tape does not have a defined shelf life or expiration date, per the manufacturer. When stored in a clean, dry environment away from excessive heat or direct sunlight, it maintains its performance characteristics. Each roll includes a manufacturer’s Certificate of Conformance (CoC) for documented quality assurance.
