QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
The Columbus Jack 5372-010 Bead Breaker is designed to separate the tire bead from the rim on a variety of aircraft wheels. It uses a hydraulic foot-pump mechanism to apply uniform force, ensuring smooth and damage-free bead breaking during tire servicing. This tool supports rims between 6” and 16” in diameter and handles loads up to 2,000 lbs (907 kg).
Always keep hands, feet, and other body parts clear of the tire and bead-breaking jaws during operation. The manual warns that personnel must stand clear of the wheel assembly to avoid injury when hydraulic force is applied. Only trained technicians should operate the equipment, and maintenance should be performed by qualified service personnel.
Before use, inspect the hydraulic system for leaks, confirm all components are tight and undamaged, and check the oil level in the reservoir. Make sure the unit is placed on a stable surface and the wheel is centered on the rollers. Performing these checks ensures safe operation and prevents damage to the tire or bead breaker assembly.
To operate, place the aircraft wheel on the built-in rollers, adjust the jaw height to contact the tire near the rim, and secure the rim latch. Then, actuate the foot-pump pedal, which hydraulically forces the jaws together to separate the tire bead. Once the bead is freed, depress the release pedal to open the jaws and rotate the tire for the next section.
Columbus Jack recommends aviation-grade hydraulic oils compatible with Buna-N seals, such as Royco 782 or AeroShell Fluid 41. The oil level should be maintained 0.5” to 1” below the fill port when the rams are fully retracted to ensure proper performance.
Routine inspections should be performed before each use, with complete hydraulic maintenance conducted periodically based on usage frequency. O-rings, seals, and valve components should be checked for wear or leaks and replaced using Columbus Jack OEM kits. Regular maintenance helps prevent pressure loss and prolongs operational life.
Two rebuild kits are available: the KC5372 Soft Kit, which includes replacement seals and O-rings, and the KD5372 Repair Kit, which contains additional mechanical components. Using genuine Columbus Jack parts ensures compatibility and preserves warranty coverage on the equipment.
The 5372-010 comes with a 12-month limited warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. This warranty covers repair or replacement of defective parts, provided the unit has not been modified or misused. Unauthorized repairs or operation outside of the guidelines in the service manual will void warranty protection.
The unit should be stored in a clean, dry location with the jaws retracted and hydraulic system depressurized. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, moisture, or hydraulic fluids like Skydrol, which can degrade seals. Cover the unit when not in use to prevent dust accumulation and contamination of moving parts.
