Vertical Speed Indicators

Traditional VSIs use a pressure capsule that reacts to changes in static air pressure as the aircraft climbs or descends. This pressure change translates into needle movement on the instrument's face.

Modern VSIs typically rely on electronic air data computers to process pressure data and display the vertical speed digitally.

Vertical speed indicators are essential avionics instruments, helping pilots:

• Maintain a desired climb or descent rate during takeoff, landing, and maneuvers
• Accurately monitor altitude changes, especially during limited-visibility conditions
• Optimize flight paths for fuel efficiency by controlling climb and descent profiles

Although both instruments deal with altitude, they provide different information. Vertical speed indicators show the rate of change in altitude (climb or descent rate) in feet per minute (fpm), while altimeters display the aircraft’s absolute height above mean sea level (MSL) in feet.
